Yucca - home care

The name of the yucca plant, which we are going to talk about at home today, sounds somewhat unusual for our ear, thinking about Finland. But no, this flower was not there at all, and therefore it is not necessary to hope for frost resistance of yucca. In fact, the birthplace of this plant is in Central America. The climate there is known to be tropical and subtropical, and therefore due care in winter for garden yucca will provide a bit difficult. In the open ground this plant is able to winter only in the southern regions. Although, if you plant the garden yucca in a container and find a decent place for wintering in your home, with the possibility of caring for it, then you can decorate your garden with this flower in the summer. But we are still more interested in the question of how to properly care for such a plant as a yucca, if we decide to grow it in an apartment.

Conditionally, care for yucca at home will be conveniently divided into 2 periods, summer and winter, as in the cold season the plant comes to rest.

Care of the room yucca in winter

If you decide to cultivate yucca, you should remember that, like many people from the tropics, this plant falls into a kind of "hibernation" during the period from October to February, so care for the yucca at this time should be appropriate. Firstly, it is the creation of the necessary room temperature, 8-12 ° C. But while the room should be light, the yucca can not stand being in the shade. Also during this period, watering is reduced and the plant is not fertilized at all. But it is impossible to leave the flower completely without watering - it will die.

Care of the yucca in summer, her transplant and reproduction

Knowingly the subtitle sounds this way, because it is possible to transplant and root new plants only after the plant leaves hibernation, that is, in spring or summer. Propagation of yucca can be cuttings and seeds, but the second method is already painfully long, but because in practice it is rarely used. As for the cuttings, they can be put in a glass with water or in moist sand and wait for the appearance of roots, and you can immediately dig in the nutrient soil and water more often until the plant does not take root. All options are good, the main thing is not to forget that the temperature for rooting the young is needed at least 20 ° C.

As for the transplant, young plants need to be transplanted every year, and adult trees need a transplant much less often - every 3-4 years. Ground for yucca is suitable store universal. Drainage is mandatory, since the plant is very sensitive to the presence of excessive moisture. After the transplant, the plant should be left for about a month alone for adaptation, that is, stop feeding, and refuse during this period from the separation of cuttings for reproduction. The day after transplanting the plant can be held in a dim light, and then returned to the usual place of residence. In general, yucca is very fond of light and fresh air, so it is recommended to take it out in the summer, but it is better to clean the flower from the too active sun. A month later, you can make mineral fertilizer, and experienced growers believe that it is better to do this by spraying the solution on the underside of the sheet.

Since yucca belongs to drought-resistant plants, it should be watered with caution, it is better to undercharge than pour, and it is necessary to remove water from pallets. You need to do this, because the slightest excess of moisture can cause rotting of roots or stems. In this case, it will be extremely difficult to save the flower. True, there is one way, it consists in the formation of air roots. To do this, above the affected area by 10-15 cm, you need to remove a piece of bark around the stem. After this place is covered with wet sphagnum and covered with polyethylene. Moss should be wetted regularly and after about 2 weeks new roots will appear. After this, you need to wait some more time for the roots to develop, then the affected area is cut off, and the plant is planted in a new (necessarily) land and preferably in a new pot, and the old container is best discarded, otherwise the plant can get sick again.
