Hibiscus garden - shelter for the winter

Hibiscus is a flower of the Malvian family, which has many different varieties and hybrids. They are annual and perennial, grassy and treelike, garden and room, frost-resistant and thermophilic. Growing the right varieties of hibiscus, it can be used to decorate rooms or a private plot. Especially popular is the cultivation of a herbaceous hibiscus hybrid, which is distinguished by its unpretentious care and very large flowers (up to 25cm in diameter).

In this article we will consider such an important issue in the cultivation of hibiscus garden - how exactly it should be prepared for winter, so that next year, you can enjoy its flowering.

When is it necessary to cover for winter hibiscus for hiding?

Frost-tolerant perennial bushes are classified as garden varieties of hibiscus, which in southern regions do not need special preparation for winter, and in northern regions or in regions with a severe little snowy winter - it is just necessary to cover it properly.

The herbaceous hybrid of hibiscus is originally a frost-resistant crop, and for the winter the above-ground part (stems) of the plant itself dies and only its powerful rhizomes remain in the earth. For successful wintering of this species of garden hibiscus, it will be enough just to wallow the soil at the site of planting.

How to keep hibiscus in the garden in winter?

In order to avoid freezing in the conditions of large frosts (from -15 $ C) and herbaceous and tree-like varieties of garden hibiscus, proper care is required when preparing for the winter. It consists of several stages:

Varieties that grow in the form of a bush with stubby shoots (for example: Syrian garden hibiscus), can be cut for winter as well as a rose or not cut at all, and pruned already in early spring, when frozen shoots will be seen.

The herbaceous varieties of hibiscus (marsh, armed or their hybrid) are cut completely by all the stems, leaving only hemp 10 cm above the ground.

It is obligatory in the late autumn to do water recharge irrigation of bush plants, but it should be done before the onset of frost, so that around the roots did not form an ice crust.

A few days after watering, it is necessary to hive bushes and the remains of herbaceous hibiscus 15-22 cm using an ordinary garden soil with the addition of humus and sand to prevent overheating of the root system.

The last step in preparing hibiscus garden for winter is warming, which is usually carried out from the second half of November, when the air temperature does not rise above + 5 $ C.

Grassy species simply fall asleep with harvested dry fallen leaves, making a mound about 15 cm high. You can also use dry sawdust instead of the ground.

In shelter from frosts young bushes are especially needed, since with age the frost resistance of hibiscus increases. This can be done in two ways:

If the winter is to be very cold, then it is better to add another lapnik to such a shelter.

Knowing how to properly cover for the winter hibiscus growing in your garden, you will every year rejoice at its beautiful blossoming, which is a real decoration of your flower garden. But do not rush to uproot the hibiscus bushes in early spring, if they have not moved away from wintering. Bush varieties of hibiscus (especially Syrian) come out of the state of winter rest much later than its grassy hybrids.
