How to sew Russian folk dress?

National Russian women's costume is associated with a colorful wide sarafan, decorated with embroidery and ribbons. The forms of these dresses without sleeves are great, since in every Russian province the outfit had its own peculiarities of cut. A dressing-gown can be deaf (slightly uncluttered), highly disguised with folding sleeves, straight on straps or having a seam or buttons in front. The style and color can be any, since in each province the national female costume had its own characteristics.

If you do not know how to sew a Russian folk sarafan for a girl, using a simple pattern, this master class is for you! Sewing a straight sundress on the straps is possible even for those who have never tried their hand at sewing. So, we are sewing a Russian sarafan worn by women in Novgorod province more than a hundred years ago.

We will need:

  1. The cut of the Russian sundress is extremely simple. First, determine the length of the product, measuring the distance from the chest to the ankle. Then proceed with the construction of the pattern. The dressing-gown consists of the front panel (1 piece), straps (2 parts), inserts (2 parts), upper paneling (2 parts) and back panel (1 part). In our example, the product is designed for a girl growing 120-140 centimeters. The volume of the waist and hips in this case does not matter.
  2. Transfer the pattern to the fabric, fastening it with pins. Circle the parts along the contour with chalk, and then cut them out. Sew on the lateral seams of the front panel with the back panel, sew the inserts. Then sew the lining of the upper part, do not forget to make wrinkles. Treat the hem of the sarafan with a seam. Now you can sew the straps, adjusting the required length. Ahead of the strap is sewn under the breast, and in the back - in the center of the back panel.
  3. Dress on the hem adorns a large ornament, which is made in the form of appliqué from patterned red chintz (the chain of rhombs on both sides is framed by narrow horizontal stripes). The edges at the top of this sarafan can be decorated with a cotton red bike. The national Russian sarafan worn by women in the beginning of the twentieth century in Novgorod province (Ustyug district) on holidays is ready!
