Knox Church, located in the New Zealand city of Dunedin , belongs to the Presbyterian denomination and is one of the most interesting architectural buildings of this city.
History of construction
The first Presbyterian church was built in 1860. Its name was given in honor of J. Knox, Scottish reformer, who became, in fact, the founder of Presbyterianism.
This religious trend turned out to be quite popular, and therefore a few years later a decision was made to build a new Knox church - on George Street.
The neo-gothic project of the architect R. Lawson, who was engaged in the erection of the building, won. However, initially, because of too large a budget, "customers" were inclined to another project.
Construction was conducted four years - 1872 to 1876 years. And all the work took almost 18 thousand pounds, although initially it was planned to allocate only 5 thousand pounds.
Architectural features
Knox's church is an impressive and attractive building. It impresses with its special architecture. In particular, the spire, towering to the sky at a height of 51 meters, deserves attention.
The building itself is built in the shape of a Latin cross, the length of the Church is 30 meters, and the width is more than 20 meters. For the construction of the building, a special blue stone was used, mined in the quarries of the Lit river.
The interior design is low-key, laconic, and stained glass windows are added to the interior. Inside there are two organs - large and small.
Before the Knox Church, a statue of the first minister of the Presbyterian Church of Dunedin, the Rev. D.M. Stuart, who served here for more than thirty years - from 1860 to 1894 years.

Knox's church is located on George Street, in the place where it connects with Pitt Street. Past the church is a public transport route.
In Dunedin itself, it is easiest to get through Wellington . There are buses from there. You can also rent a car. Travel time - from 12 hours.
Another option is by plane, but it's quite expensive, about $ 260, although the flight itself will take a bit more than an hour. However, please note that the airport is located 23 kilometers from the city.
