Livingston House


David Livingstone's House is located near the capital of the island of Zanzibar , north of the city of Stone Town on the Boububu road. From an architectural point of view, Livingston's house is of no value to the tourist, it is a usual three-story building with a lot of windows and red tiles on the roof. It is valuable only as the abode of the great traveler David Livingston.

More about the building

David Livingston, whose name is the building, was a famous traveler from England who devoted his life to missionary work and the introduction of civilization into the wild African tribes. It was David who discovered the famous Victoria Falls. In honor of him, several cities are named around the world. In the middle of the XIX century, he came to Africa with a missionary purpose to convert the local population into Anglican faith. But the great scientist did not have enough oratory skills, and he decided to study the African lands.

This house was built in 1860 by order for the Sultan Majid ibn Said, so that he could rest from the metropolitan life. In 1870, after the death of the Sultan, the house became a haven for travelers and missionaries. Here lived Livingston before his last expedition in April 1873. After the death of the traveler until 1947, the building belonged to the Hindu community. Then it was bought by the government of Tanzania , it was reconstructed and now the office of the State Tourist Corporation of Zanzibar is located here.

How to get there?

It is easy to get to the Livingston House - the building is located 6 km from Tabor in the vicinity of Stone Town in the direction to the east. Taxi from the city and back will cost 10,000 shillings.

You can enter Livingston's house without problems. The cost of excursions and the number of people in groups should be specified in advance.
