Melnik Castle

If you like to visit ancient buildings, then pay attention to the castle of Melnik (Zámek Mělník). It is located in the Czech Republic on the territory of the homonymous city at the confluence of two rivers: Labe and Vltava. This unique building has a rich history and is popular with women.

General information about Castle Melnik

The structure was erected from a tree on a high hill in the 9th century. In the 13th century it was rebuilt into a stone fortress. In 1542, a Renaissance castle appeared on this place, which since then has practically not changed. Here the history of Czech winemaking originated, and the surrounding area is still planted with vineyards. The last 200 years the palace belongs to the family of Lobkowicz, and descendants of this genus still live here.

Historical background

For several decades in the castle Melnik lived the wives of Czech monarchs. The fact is that the kings were forbidden to get divorced from unwanted spouses, so the rulers sent them to this palace. Here in their time, 23 princesses and queens were taken refuge.

By order of the wife of Charles the Fourth - Elizabeth (daughter of the Duke of Pomeranian Bogislava) in the territory of the castle Melnik in the Czech Republic built a chapel. Originally it was consecrated in honor of St. Ludwig, and later renamed to Lyudmila (in honor of the grandmother of Wenceslas - patron of the country). The temple is famous for its wooden bell tower, which still works.

How to get to the Castle of Melnik from Prague?

From the capital of the Czech Republic you can get here by bus, which departs from Holesovice station (Nadrazi Holesovice). The journey takes up to 45 minutes.
