Modern Art Museum


In one of the four-story buildings erected in the middle of the 20th century in the heart of Sydney , the Museum of Contemporary Art is located, which was made available to the general public in 1991.

The building of the Museum is made in the style of art deco is considered one of the notable places on the waterfront. Its façade rushes into the bay, revealing the water surface of the bay and a magnificent view of the Sydney Opera House.

A bit of history

Initially, in the room now occupied by the Museum of Modern Art, the Maritime Radio Service was based. In 1989, officials decide to transfer the building to the disposal of "connoisseurs of beauty". So in 1989 on the map of Sydney there was a Museum of Modern Art. Since 1990, large-scale restoration works have begun, which lasted a year and cost the state treasury of 53 million Australian dollars.

Museum today

The Museum of Contemporary Art is considered one of the youngest cultural institutions of the Australian capital, and its work is highly appreciated. The museum was made famous by John Powers, an immigrant artist. Power for a long time collected his unique collection of 20th century art objects and at the end of his life he transferred it to the University. John Power wanted future artists, residents of Sydney and his guests to have the opportunity to see the manifestation of contemporary art in the unusual works of artists who dedicated their lives to it.

Today the museum exposition is huge and is represented by the works of Power himself, as well as by the creations of famous Warhol, Liechtenstein, Christo, Okni. Exhibitions have collected works of contemporary art, from the seventies of the last century to our days.

Helpful information

The Museum of Modern Art in Sydney works seven days a week from 09:00 to 17:00. The main exhibitions of the museum can be visited free of charge. Mobile exhibitions that represent the work of foreign artists are paid for, the ticket price depends on the "eminence" of the authors.

How to get there?

Travel to the Museum of Modern Art will take very little time. Next to it is the public transport stop "George St Opp Globe St", on which buses come from different parts of the city. The road from the stop to the museum building will last a couple of minutes. In addition, the railway station and the ferry pier are close by, so if you want you can come by train or sail by ferry.
