Osteosynthesis of the femur

Osteosynthesis of the femur is a procedure during which bone fragments are joined. It provides a strong fixation of the correlated fragments, until they fully accumulate. This method of treatment is internal, when different implants are used inside the patient's body, and external, in which distraction-compression apparatuses of external fixation are used.

Indications for osteosynthesis of the femur

Osteosynthesis of the femur by an internal pin or by a distraction-compression device is shown when:

Types of osteosynthesis of the femur

The main types of osteosynthesis of the femur are:

  1. Intramedullary osteosynthesis of the femur is the treatment of a fracture in which pins with a blockage equipped with apertures at the ends are used. Through these holes, screws are inserted through the injured bone and fixing the fragments. The advantage of this method is its low traumaticity, as well as the ability to load a sick limb a few days after their installation.
  2. Bone osteosynthesis - it is performed with the help of plates of various dimensions. They make holes through which they are connected with bone screws. The latest achievement in the field of this method of treatment are the plates with angular and polyaxial stability. In addition to threading on the screw, they have threads in the screw head and in the holes. Thanks to this, after the operation of osteosynthesis of the femur, there is no situation in which the plate will bend.
  3. Osteosynthesis by external fixation devices - through the bone, rods or spokes are held, which are fixed above the surface of the skin. They provide excellent fixation of bone fragments, and rehabilitation after this type of osteosynthesis of the femur passes quickly and painlessly.
