Slomškov Square

Maribor is the second largest city in Slovenia , located in the north-eastern part of the country on the two banks of the Drava River . Tourists do not meet here unique sights , but to be imbued with a special charm, tranquility and charm of old streets will turn out. When visiting Maribor, it is difficult to miss the square from the view of Slomškov.

What is the place?

Slomškov Square (Maribor) is a unique place, especially popular among tourists, because it is here that the best hotels, restaurants, cafes and bars are located. The square embodies Slovenian hospitality, since it is impossible to leave from here without having tasted the national or European dishes. After a long walk around the city, many tourists return to Slomškov Square, which is to replenish the forces, relax and admire the architecture.

The attraction was named in honor of the Slovenian Bishop-educator Anton Martin Slomashek, it is the city that owes its appearance to him. At the initiative of the bishop, the administration of the Levantine diocese was transferred from Andraj to Maribor in 1859. But it was renamed only in 1991. The older name of the square is Kirchenplatz, because nearby is the parish church of St. John the Baptist.

What is remarkable about the area?

The area is easy to recognize by the gothic column-lamp, which was erected in 1517. It was part of the entrance to the city cemetery, which had long since been destroyed, only members of noble families of Maribor were buried there. The tombs that were discovered were built into the outer wall of the church. The latter is located in the center of the square, but it was built in the first half of the 12th century. For the building was chosen a Romanesque style, and the Table Church itself was a Triland basilica.

The attraction is in a convenient location, from which you can go to other interesting places of Maribor. The cathedral of the diocese of St. John the Baptist, the national theater and the café-bar Tildo are located very close by. In it you can relax after a tiring and long walk around the city. The cafe-bar serves national Slovenian wines, nice music sounds. In the evenings, street lights are lit, so that locals and tourists do not disperse until late at night.

Slomškov Square (Maribor) occupies a rather small area between the University of Maribor and the Cathedral. There are many green spaces, trees, which will serve as an excellent background for photos. The park was defeated in 1891, and a century later monuments were erected to the famous Slovenian enlightener.

The area is surrounded by stunning buildings, both in beauty and historical significance. In the park there is a children's pool with a sculpture, part of the monument created by the Slovenian master Gabriel Kolbich. Walking around the area, you can come across a tombstone of the Roman era of the first or second century AD.
