Preparing the garden for winter

Are you happy with your garden? And the fruit trees delight in the harvest and walk pleasantly along the paths? Then, of course, we must start preparing the garden for the winter, so that all this beauty can endure the cold season. Someone will say why something is worth it, the garden itself is wonderful to prepare for the winter, and it remains for us only to scrape the fallen leaves closer to the roots. In principle, this approach can not be called completely erroneous, many fruit trees are able to survive the winter like this. But as practice shows, to prepare a garden for winter is simply necessary if it is a question of young fruit trees or heat-loving and capricious plants.

To prepare a garden for winter, you need to start in advance, for example, pruning. And the final measures, such as tying the bows of insulation, you need to postpone until late autumn. Beware of doing it too early, the greenhouse effect is not needed at all by your trees.

But, modern gardens are not limited to some fruit trees on the territory, and therefore let's consider how to prepare for the winter of every inhabitant of the garden.

Fruit trees and shrubs

We begin preparation of a young fruit garden for the winter from lining the stump of mulch or fallen leaves. A bushes or trees wrap sacking, if it is completely young planting, completely. And still need to apply a garden whitewash or lime on the trunks of trees, this protect the bark from the temperature drops. In order for the solution to better grasp it add 1-2 tbsp. spoon flour flour for 2-2.5 kg of slaked lime. You can also use mullein or clay instead of paste, but not joiner glue - it will not allow the tree bark to "breathe" by forming an almost airtight film on tree trunks. Some shrubs, such as raspberries, do not tolerate cold, so they need to be bent to the ground. Under a layer of snow they will feel fine.

Perennial flowers

Many of them are perfectly adapted to winter, only the aerial parts of plants die, and the growth buds survive the winter under snow, but in the event that the thickness of the snow cover is sufficient. Therefore, the areas from which the snow can be blown off, covered with lapnika. If, in preparing the garden for the winter, you will find on your site plants such as chrysanthemum, crocsium or anemone, then show them increased attention. These plants are fenced with a wire frame and clogged with dry shavings, and on top we cover with polyethylene. Rosehips and wild roses do not need shelter, but cultural roses must be covered. It is advisable to use an air-dry method of shelter.

If you are going to plant under the winter tulips, lilies of the valley and other such plants, then you need to do this until the end of October. But the bulbs of dahlias, gladioli and begonias must be excavated and kept until the spring, since in the ground they will certainly freeze.

Decorative cereals and spicy herbs, especially those whose homeland is in the warmer strip, should be covered with a tent from the billet. Evergreen deciduous plants are covered with burlap or reed mats. But coniferous evergreen shrubs do not need shelter, there will be enough snow. Therefore, if the branch does not risk breaking off under its weight, then it is better not to shake the snow.

Lawn

We prepare for the winter not only flowers and fruit trees and shrubs, but also such an important decorative part of the garden as the lawn. To make the lawn more resistant to winter cold, in early October we add potash fertilizers and weak it before hibernation, and remove all the leaves from it. By the way, the prohibition to walk on the lawn is spreading and for the time being the layer of fallen snow is not too large.

Pond

If you have a pond in the garden, then it is prepared for the winter also carefully, as well as the rest of the inhabitants of the site. The fallen leaves and dead parts of plants are removed from the surface. If there are green plantations in the pond, then you will have to remove the snow from the ice in order to provide a sufficient level of illumination. If there is also fish there, then they will be able to overwinter for a depth of more than 80 cm in the pond and the presence of an air supply, so you have to drill holes.

As you can see, preparing a garden for winter is not particularly difficult, if you do it on time.
