San Cristobal

San Cristobal is an island in the Galapagos archipelago . The name is given by the name of St. Christopher. Previously called Chatham in honor of the British Prime Minister. On the island is the city of Puerto Baquerizo Mareno, which is the capital of all the Galapagos islands. The airport is located to the south-west from the capital.

Information about the island

This beautiful quiet island has a very small area - about 558 sq. Km. km. The highest point is the summit of an extinct volcano with a height of 0.73 km. The volcano divides the island into two parts with different climates. Its slopes, as well as the south-western part of the land, are in a humid climate. The north-east of the island is an arid semi-desert area.

Flora and fauna

Since the colonization of San Cristobal by humans, the local plant and animal world has undergone a major change. Most endemics have disappeared, the survivors have survived only in the furthest corners of it, where the human foot steps very rarely. The current leadership of the island is trying to carry out measures to restore flora and fauna, but so far this is not too noticeable.

However, there are quite a lot of animals and birds here. These are sea lions - inveterate inhabitants of all the Galapagossians, elephant turtles, iguanas of different species, red-legged and blue-legged boobies, frigates and Galapagos gulls. Elephant turtles on the island are bred, restoring their population. Here is a fairly large nursery. Marine inhabitants of coastal waters are represented by dolphins, rays, sharks and lobsters.

Where to go and what to see?

The island is arranged in much the same way as other Galapagos inhabited islands. There is an embankment on it - a place where you can walk and admire the ocean. There are convenient bridges - such as observation platforms for watching marine animals.

Along the quay stretched a string of cafes and restaurants, shops with souvenirs, travel agencies. Sea lions in San Cristobal more than any other of the islands. However, soon they are put back.
