Shivapuri Nagarjun


In the north of the Kathmandu valley , at the foot of the mountains, the natural Nepal National Park of Shivapuri Nagarjun extends. It is located at the confluence of subtropical and temperate climates, because the temperature differences here are very large. From May to September, during the rainy season, more than 80% of precipitation, calculated for the whole year, falls out here, so this is not the best time for visits.

A bit of history

Park area of ​​144 square meters. km. was taken under protection in 1976 and became a nature reserve. When in 2002, the territory of the Nagarjun reserve was annexed to it in 15 sq. Km. km, the park became national. He got his name for the peak of Shivapuri with a height of 2732 m, located here. Mount Nagarjun, which gave the second name to the park, in ancient times became the last refuge of the famous seer and guru.

Here grow numerous medicinal herbs, from which local Aesculapius cook their potions. Trees are Himalayan pine and spruce, as well as deciduous trees of the Himalayan subtropics. You can find here and unique endemic species of vegetation. Having seen a variety of mushrooms - and there are 129 of them here, do not rush to collect them in the basket - many are poisonous and cause hallucinations.

To get into the park, you need a car. It can be reached by 35-37 minutes via Gilfutar Main Rd or Dhumbarahi Marg and Gilfutar Main Rd. In the park there are hiking trails.
