The Moravian Museum

The Moravian Land Museum is located in the city ​​of Brno , in the palace of František Dietrichstein, built in the beginning of the XVII century. The foundation date of the museum is 29.07.1817, when the decree of the Emperor Franz I. came out. Here is a rich collection of 6 million exhibits relating to different historical periods.

Dietrichstein Palace

Cardinal Frantisek Dietrichstein, for whom this palace was built in 1620, this palace, considered it his favorite residence. After his death, the building was repeatedly rebuilt, and the final view was taken in 1748 after the reconstruction, which was remade the lobby, some rooms and the main entrance.

The palace is famous for the fact that high-ranking guests stayed at its walls at various times. Empress Maria Theresa and Russian commander M.I. Kutuzov before the battle of Austerlitz.

In the twentieth century, the mansion completely rebuilt for the needs of the museum, created the necessary conditions for storage and transported the historical part of the exhibits, including the mammoth in full growth.

His collection is considered one of the best in the Czech Republic in history, natural history, biology and other natural sciences, as well as local history, as the museum tells about the life of Moravia from its founding until today.

The most popular exhibit of the museum is the statuette Venus Vestonitskaya, created in the Paleolithic era. It was found in 1925 in the town of Dolni Vestonice. It is about 27 thousand years old, and it is the oldest ceramic statuette in the world.

How to get to the Moravian Museum?

The building is just 5 minutes walk from Brno's main train station, where trains come from Prague . The trains from the capital depart every half hour, the journey time is about 3 hours. From the station of Florence Florens there is a direct bus FliksBus (journey time 2,5 hours). It stops at the Brno Grand Hotel, from it to the museum can be reached on foot in 5 minutes. By car, the road will also take about 2.5 hours, you need to leave Prague for route D1, the distance to Brno is 200 km.
