Yoshkar-Ola - tourist attractions

The Republican capital of Yoshkar-Ola is far from being an ordinary Russian city . First of all, I would like to note an unusual and very harmonious combination of old buildings and new buildings in the city center. There are many beautiful and interesting places in Ioshkar-Ola, which are picturesque local sights. Consider where you can go if you came to the weekend in the capital of the Republic of Mari El.

Main Attractions in Yoshkar-Ola

Do not be surprised to see in the very center of the city a real Spassky tower. This is just a copy of the famous Moscow building. It is much smaller than the original, but the chimes on the tower are beating like real ones. The indigenous Yoshkar-lilans are very proud of their tower.

Before the revolution, Yoshkar-Ola was called Tsarevo-Koksha. Since then, several buildings of ancient houses, which belonged to prosperous merchants, have been preserved in the city. Among them, the most interesting objects are the houses of Karelin, Naumov, Pchelina, Bulygin, Korepovs, the Chulkov manor.

Along with the ancient monuments of culture, new buildings are also of interest, which fit perfectly with the general architecture of the city. Since 2007, Yoshkar-Ola has been actively rebuilt, more and more new houses, streets, office buildings are being built, old ones are being reconstructed. For example, one of the best modern attractions of Yoshkar-Ola is the embankment of Bruges, similar to the city of the same Flemish type of development.

Temple buildings

The first stone, and even a two-tier building, which appeared in the city in the XVII century, became the Church of the Holy Trinity. He was a great example of Russian architecture of that time. However, much has changed since then: in the Soviet times the church was closed, and its bell tower was dismantled. Literally 5 years ago, restoration work was started, and today the Church of the Holy Trinity is a completely different structure, although no less beautiful.

A similar story and the Cathedral of the Ascension of the Lord, also two-story. It had a unique form of "octagon on the quadrangle". Restoration work is under way today, and modern architects are trying to restore the former greatness of the church, destroyed by time and people.

Museums of Yoshkar-Ola

Among the museums of Yoshkar-Ola we will highlight the Museum of the History of the City. It was founded relatively recently and is located in the building of an ancient mansion. Having visited the museum, you will get acquainted with the history of the foundation of Tsarevo Kokshaisk and its development.

The National Museum of the Republic of Mari El is interesting with its archaeological collections, ethnographic exhibits and samples of applied art of the Mari people.

For lovers of fine arts, it will be fascinating to visit two more museums - the Republican Museum of Fine Arts and, of course, the National Art Gallery.

Other places of interest in Yoshkar-Ola

Another landmark of Yoshkar-Ola is the famous watch "12 apostles" on the above-mentioned building of the art gallery on Patriarch's Square. They are considered very accurate, as their work is corrected from the satellite. And every three hours from the symbolic door there is a donkey bearing the icon of the Mother of God with the Savior, and, to the sound of the chant, slowly enters the door on the opposite side of the circle of the clock. For Jesus, all the apostles are moving, so the clock has its name. So the authors of the idea portrayed the scene of the Lord's Entry into Jerusalem . The figure of each apostle reaches 1.5 m in height, some of them are mobile.

In the capital of Mari El there are many monuments. One of these interesting sculptural compositions is the Yoshkin cat - a statue weighing 150 kg, located on the territory of the Mari State University. This cat fell flat on the bench, as if inviting to sit next to him and make him a company. Students of the University have a fun tradition - to stroke a cat on the nose with the successful passing of the exam and the protection of the diploma.
