Church of St. Peter (Copenhagen)


In the heart of the capital of Denmark Copenhagen is one of the oldest Catholic cathedrals - the Church of St. Peter. This beautiful building is interesting in that it combines a variety of architectural styles.

History of the Church

Until 1386, on the site where the St. Peter's Church in Copenhagen now stands, stood the Cathedral of the Virgin Mary. As a result of the fierce fire, the cathedral was badly damaged. In the 15th century a new church was built on the site of the fire. Initially, the building was used as a shop where military guns were manufactured. In the 16th century, local Protestants sat in the building, and in 1757 it moved to the German community, so all services have since been conducted in German. Currently, the Church of St. Peter in Copenhagen belongs to the Danish government.

Features of the church

The bright red exterior walls of the church are replaced by snow-white walls of its internal space. St. Peter's Church is just 100 meters from the Church of Our Lady and 300 meters from the Church of the Holy Spirit. It will not be difficult to get to it. It is better to choose the bus number 11A and go to the stop Krystalgade. Norreport metro station is also close to the churches.
