Sennerborg Castle


The castle of Sønderborg is a real impregnable fortress located on the island of Als, which has been diligently built for centuries and against numerous armies, thanks to which we can observe it even after almost a thousand years. Already in our days the castle was converted into a museum in which the centuries-old history of Denmark and the whole world is represented.

History of the castle

Around 1158, the castle of Sønderborg was built on the island of Als, and it was planned as the strongest and most powerful fortress in the country, which would protect the shores of the homeland from the attacks of the Slavic tribes. Built castle was on the orders of King Voldemar the Great and part-time grandson of Grand Duke Vladimir Monomakh. In 1495, King Hans became the fortress, who with his son Christian II thoroughly improved the structure and turned it into one of the strongest and strongest strongholds in the whole of Denmark . In 1921, the castle was equipped with a museum of the castle Sønderborg, also one of the country's sights .

Directly next to the castle there are no public transport stops, but bus number 5 stops a few blocks from the Museum of Sønderborg, from where you will quickly walk to your destination.
