Crater Lake Kerid


Lake Kerid, located in southern Iceland , is a volcanic crater filled with water. Its age is about 3000 years, and the remaining nearby volcanic structures are twice as old. Perhaps, therefore, the lake is well preserved and has an almost ideal oval shape.

At length, Kerid stretched for 270 meters, and in width - for 170, the height of its shores is 55 meters. Crater Lake Kerid, consists of a red volcanic rock. On its steep walls there is little vegetation, except for a more gentle slope on which moss grows. From this side you can even go to the water. The lake itself is shallow, only 7-14 meters high, but striking with its beauty.

Kerid offers a great contrast of colors and a very impressive landscape, it looks like an opaque aquamarine, surrounded by red walls of the crater. This landmark of Iceland is one of the three most famous, crater lakes in the world.

The shores of the lake consist of very hard rock, which creates an unusual acoustics, as if you are in a cocoon, and all external sounds - wind, noise from the road - disappear. Therefore, charitable concerts are held from time to time in the crater. At the same time, the performers are placed on a raft on the lake itself, and spectators on the banks, as in a natural amphitheater. The first such concert took place in 1987.

Inspection rules

Entrance to the territory where this lake is located will cost about 2 euro for adult visitors, children under 12 years old - free of charge. Initially, the visit was free, but then the authorities stated that an uncontrolled visit to this landmark could damage nature, and introduced a fee.

If you decide to go down, then be careful. Despite the fact that the slope seems flat, nevertheless, when you descend, you can turn your leg.

Where is it located?

Lake Kerid is located near the town of Selfoss and is part of the "Golden Ring" of Iceland . You can get there either by car from Reykjavik along Highway 1, turning onto road 35, or by bus, buying a special passport.
