How to teach a child to read syllables at home?

The modern school program assumes that future first-graders have to have many skills before the school, including reading by syllables. Therefore, the burden on teaching children to read and write falls on the shoulders of kindergarten teachers and, of course, parents. Let's learn about how best to teach a child to read by syllables, what subtleties and secrets there are in this seemingly difficult business.

How easy is it to teach a child to read by syllables?

The following tips will help you become a good reading teacher for your child:

  1. First of all, decide on the age. The kid must be psychologically ready for learning, preferably (but not necessarily) so that he knows the basic letters of the alphabet. Usually, reading begins at 5-6 years, which corresponds to the preparatory group of the kindergarten. You should not focus on reading, trying to teach a three-year-old to read Pushkin - it's unlikely you will succeed, but for goodness it's a hindrance not only for reading, but for studying in principle, quite realistically.
  2. When starting training, try to choose a good teaching aid for this. The most popular (and therefore one of the best) books in this category is the ABC book edited by N.S. Zhukovoy.
  3. They usually start with the so-called solid vowels, which include the letters A, 0, Y, E, N. Then come hard voiced consonants A and M, and after them - deaf and hissing (D, T, K, W, F, etc.). Here the most important point is the need to observe the rules of pronunciation of sounds. For example, when pronouncing the sound of M, the child should not speak "EM" (this is the name of the letter, not the sound), not "ME" or "WE", but just a short "M". This is very important in order to subsequently correctly combine sounds into syllables.
  4. As a rule, you can teach a child how to read syllables together after studying these letters. This is easy to achieve by showing the child an illustration from the above-mentioned manual. In the alphabet, one letter catches up with another: explain to your student that you need to read the syllables, as if extending one sound to connect it with another: "mmmm-ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Thus it is not necessary to sound each letter first, and then to unite them - it is necessary to accustom the child at once to say a syllable. At first it will be somewhat difficult, but as soon as he understands the meaning of your requirements, things will go faster.
  5. To begin with, offer the child the simplest syllables of two letters: MA, BA, CO, OU, etc. When he learns this wisdom, one can proceed to a more complex one, for example, to syllables that begin with a vowel (AK, OH, UX). And only then, when your future student is already confidently reading the syllables, proceed to the words (MA-MA, MY-SO, KO-RO-VA, MO-LO-KO).
  6. Pay attention to the fact that the child himself "watched" the course of reading, helping himself with a pointer or finger. Also important is the pause between words - this must be emphasized, otherwise the child can read (or sing, as some teachers advise to do) all the words, and even sentences, in a row.
  7. Do not forget and do not be lazy at the beginning of each lesson to repeat the information learned in the previous lesson. This will greatly facilitate the learning process, and learning to read will take much less time.
  8. Lessons for preschoolers should, first, be short (no longer than 15 minutes), and secondly, take place in a game form. Training is much easier if it is built in the form of a game. Never force a child to read and do not scold him for mistakes - at first they are inevitable. Only feeling the support of parents, your baby will quickly learn to read.

As practice shows, quickly to teach a child to read by syllables is possible even at home, without tutors: just arm yourself with a pencil and take into account the above tips.
