Nykoping Castle


One of the symbols of Sweden is considered to be castles , the number of which is really impressive. Only one region of the country can consist of up to 400 fortresses, castles and citadels belonging to royal, state and private real estate. The main attraction of the Swedish town of Nykoping is the Nykoping Castle, or Nycepighaus. Due to its centuries-old history and architectural features, it never ceases to attract travelers from all over the world.

Castle yesterday and today

The first fortress of the castel type, erected in the XII century. at the place of the castle in Nyköping, is not preserved. The building was often exposed to fires and partially restored. In the XIX century. The fortress was practically destroyed as a result of popular uprising and military operations. Approximately half a century later, the Nyköping castle was restored and rebuilt several times. It is known that in the XVI century. The fortress was the residence of King Charles IX.

At present, in the surviving and restored buildings of the former temple complex, there is a museum where anyone can go. Also on the territory of Nykoping Castle there is a souvenir shop and a small restaurant. Tourists can sign up for a tour of the castle.

How to get to the sights?

At 150 m from Nyköping Castle there is a public transport stop Nyköping Nyköpingshus. Buses here come on schedule. From the stop to the fortress about 2 min. walk along Vallgatan street.
