Osteotomy of the lower jaw

Some varieties of bite , defects and deformations of the lower jaw are not amenable to non-surgical treatment. Especially often this occurs in adulthood due to fully formed bone tissue. In such cases, the osteotomy of the lower jaw is prescribed - a surgical intervention aimed at radically correcting various developmental anomalies.

Horizontal mandibular osteotomy and other types of operations

The considered form of correction of occlusion and deformations of the dentition is carried out together with the orthodontist, who observes the patient. This is necessary for a correct assessment of the situation by the attending physician. Orthodontic therapy is required both before surgery and after surgery.

Horizontal, sagittal and intercortical osteotomy of the lower jaw, as well as other types of the procedure described, are performed under anesthesia. The duration of surgical manipulation is 1-6 hours, depending on the goals and complexity of the corrected deformations.

The essence of the operation is to gain access to the lower jaw through the incisions within the oral cavity. After that, the surgeon cuts the bone tissue with a special tool. The obtained segments of the jaw move to a preselected area and are fixed in the correct position with plates and screws made of medical titanium. The incisions are closed and treated with an antiseptic.

Rehabilitation after osteotomy of the lower jaw

For 30-40 days from the operation, soft facial tissues swell. Sometimes the sensitivity of the chin and lower lip is disturbed, this symptom passes by itself for 4 months.

The first 3 days after the procedure it is desirable to stay in the clinic for observation of doctors and receive recommendations, less often this period is extended to 10 days.

Further recovery is the wearing of special braces or other devices designated by the orthodontist.
