Rational psychotherapy

We are upset, experiencing joy, happiness , disappointment, anger, as we believe, because of the presence or absence of something in our lives. However, the therapist Albert Ellis proved that we are not angry because someone screams at us, but because of how we perceive this fact.

The creator of rational psychotherapy is Albert Ellis. This is a section of cognitive psychotherapy that studies and eliminates inadequate human responses. As Ellis said, a person does not have direct, developed reactions to anything, his reaction depends solely on the way he perceives the situation itself.

ABC theory

Rationally-emotional psychotherapy is also called the ABC theory. Where A are events, situations, facts, actions, B are views on life, religion, opinions, judgments, and C - consequences, that is, reaction. Agree, the person who stepped on the foot in the tram, can react quite unpredictably - can roll up a scandal, cry, get into a fight, or just keep silent. To predict its behavior, one can only know "B" - views on life, opinions, beliefs, judgments, mood, character , prehistory of "foot in a tram".

Rationally-emotional psychotherapy deals with the study of irrational and inadequate reactions in human behavior. Such reactions cause emotional disorders of the psyche, and therefore the ABC theory is not only studying, but also eliminating the irrational.

Therapy

Irrational reactions are treated with the help of psychotherapy. At receptions, psychotherapists ask a person with an inadequate reaction to tell about a life situation and build a chain of ABC. He should name the situation itself, name its prehistory (the state in which A happened) and the conclusion (C). After that, he is offered to consider other options - the situation is the same, but B is different, what will C be then?

This exercise can be performed on your own, at home, when you notice behind yourself inadequate reactions to trifling and typical life situations.
