The Mosque of Fethiye

The Fethiye Mosque is located in the city of Bihac and is not only one of the main religious attractions of this village, but the whole of Bosnia and Herzegovina, attracting local Muslims, pilgrims from other cities of the country and tourists who came to familiarize themselves with the special culture of the locals.

Roots in history

Bihac is one of the most ancient cities of Bosnia and Herzegovina , with a deep history, combining many stages of development not only of local lands, but of all the Balkans.

Settlement, the first mention of which refers to the year 1260, for centuries of its existence managed to be under the authority of different states and empires. Including, it was a part of the Ottoman Empire, and therefore here, as in all Bosnia and Herzegovina, there are many Muslims who visit their shrine - the Fethiye Mosque.

Construction of a mosque

The Fethiye Mosque, according to the chronicles, was erected in 1592. At the same time, the Catholic Cathedral of Anthony of Padua, made in the Gothic style, is taken as the basis of the mosque.

Perhaps, thanks to this particular structure, combining different architectural styles, is a unique architectural monument. By the way, Fethiye Mosque is rightly recognized as one of the most preserved religious ancient sites of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

By the way, according to some surviving ancient documents, the cathedral of Anthony of Padua, in place of which the "mosque" also grew, was also beautiful from the point of view of architecture.

Despite the fact that the Catholic cathedral, like most Orthodox churches, was rebuilt after the seizure of the local lands by the Turks, certain features of Gothic can still be seen. For example, in a stained glass window above the entrance.

The minaret near the mosque was erected only in 1863. The date of construction is shown by two Arabic inscriptions at the foot of the minaret, perfectly preserved.

By the way, during the Bosnian war, which lasted from 1992 to 1995, Bihac was under siege for three years, and therefore suffered badly, but the mosque has already been restored.

How to get there?

The easiest way to get to Bihac is to admire the mosque, by train from Sarajevo , the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. But in Sarajevo from Moscow to fly will have to change - in Vienna, Istanbul or another airport, depending on the flight. There are no direct regular air flights yet.
