Trench Town

Trench Town is a poor neighborhood (practically a slum) in Kingston , the capital of Jamaica . Trench Town is the home of ska, Rogstedi and reggae. It was here that the legendary Bob Marley lived before his glory fell upon him. Here lived another legendary songwriter - Vincent "Tata" Ford. Trench Town is often mentioned in the songs of Bob Marley and other Jamaican musicians.

general information

There is an area almost in the center of the city, in St. Andrew's district, in front of the Mei-Pen cemetery. It is limited to the streets of Spanish Town Road, Gem Road, Colin Smith Drive and Maxfield Avenue. Design Trench Town was in the 30s of last century as a "district of the future" for the poor people of the city. The project was awarded with a lot of prizes - but as a result it turned out to be a banal set of houses and shacks with a common courtyard, one kitchen and a bathroom for several cottages.

The name "trench town" was not obtained at all because of a large ditch for drainage of rainwater that stretches along Collie-Smith Drive, and in honor of the former owner of these lands, which bore the surname Trench. According to recent estimates, Trench-Town has more than 25 thousand inhabitants.

Attractions Trench Town

The main attraction of Trench Town is the Cultural Center , located at Lower First St., 6-10, that is, in the house where Bob Marley lived . In 2007, the Center was declared a state-protected heritage site. Here you can see the room in which Bob lived, and the old bus, in which his group went on a tour.

Near the Cultural Center is the Reading Center , where residents of the area can absolutely join the knowledge. In Trench Town there is also the Vin Lawrence Park, which hosts annual concerts on the birthday of Bob Marley and various reggae festivals.

And, of course, the real attractions of Trench Town, which make this area completely unique, are its shack houses with tin roofs and bright coloring.

How to get to Trench Town?

From the city center to Trench Town you can walk. You can come here by municipal transport, however, the bus schedule departing from the nearest Half Way Tree Transport Center is unstable and often not respected. Travel by bus will cost from 35 to 50 Jamaican dollars.

You can come by car. For example, from the National Heroes Park, you can reach the area through 7 St: first take Eve Ln towards Orange St, then turn from Orange St to Rosedale ave. Then turn right onto Slipe Pen Rd after driving 240 meters and turn right at Studley Park Rd. At the end of the trip, after traveling about 300 m and turning right, you will get to 7 St, which you will reach the destination of the trip.

In the darkest hours in Trench Town it's better not to wander - the crime rate here is such as it should be in the "classic" slums. There are many armed street gangs, but due to reverence for the great Jamaica Bob Marley, visitors to his museum are not at risk.
