What is ICSI different from IVF?

In the modern world, a rather high percentage of childless marriages. In some cases, abandonment of children is a deliberate step of both spouses in favor of other interests. But most couples with a huge desire to become parents can not conceive and give birth to a child due to a violation of reproductive functions.

And here the couple have two options for solving the problem: to adopt a child from a children's institution or to turn to specialists in reproductive medicine. If the last option is chosen on the family council, then the couple goes to a specialized clinic where they are offered promising methods of artificial insemination.

There are several methods of assisted reproductive technologies. The most promising of these are the IVF method and the ICSI method. Consider what the essence of these technologies is, and how ICSI differs from IVF.

The method of IVF - in vitro fertilization

The most common method of reproductive medicine. Used for impaired fertility in women with a high-quality semen from her husband. The essence of the IVF method is the selection of mature eggs from the ovaries of a woman and the subsequent fertilization of her husband's spermatozoa under laboratory conditions. Simply put, fertilization occurs outside the body of a woman. In a few days, if the egg begins to divide (fertilization has occurred), it is inserted into the body of the woman for further gestation.

The ICSI method - the essence and causes of application

As a rule, ICSI is carried out as part of the IVF program, and is administered with a low quality of the husband's sperm. At the same time, the best quality and viable sperm are selected from the sample of sperm and a special needle is inserted directly into the mature egg. Further procedures are carried out in the same way as for in vitro fertilization. Usually the ICSI method is followed after unsuccessful IVF attempts.

The difference between the IVF method and ICSI

The main thing that ICSI differs from the IVF method is the procedure of conception. With the classical ECO method, the sperm and the egg are in a test tube, where fertilization takes place in the free regime. Simply put, the very process of conception is not much different from the natural one - the egg is fertilized by the strongest of the spermatozoa that entered it. Unlike IVF with ICSI, one sperm is injected into the egg by a special instrument, and this procedure is completely controlled by a specialist. Here there are no more approximate conditions for natural, only a clearly defined technical procedure - this is the main difference between IVF and ICSI.

The reason for applying this or that method is also an indicator, what distinguishes ICSI from IVF. In the case of male infertility, when sperm has low quality and viability characteristics, ICSI is used. In case of violation of reproductive functions in a woman - female infertility, the method of IVF is topical. If the presence of a large number of qualitative spermatozoa is important for the IVF program, then for the successful implementation of the ICSI method it will be sufficient to single out only one viable male cell.

In the case when both spouses have problems with reproductive function, doctors suggest that they undergo both procedures, so that the complex ECO plus ICSI gives the long-awaited result.
