Reproduction of geranium with cuttings in spring

Geranium is a perennial plant that can grow at home for ten or more years. But only with time the trunk of the plant is bare, leaves and flowers remain only on the top, because of what its decorativeness is lost. The young plant looks quite different - with a dense and even crown. For pelargonium to remain always attractive, it needs to be updated periodically. And then the reproduction of geranium by propagation by propagation will help.

Vegetative reproduction of geraniums

There are several ways of multiplying geraniums, but the most successful, both for home and garden - is cuttings (propagation by cuttings). Seed infestation is applicable to spruce and zonal varieties. It is not advisable to propagate the rest with seeds.

You can cuttings at any time of the year, but they best take root in the spring, when the juices move along the trunk and leaves especially actively. When multiplying an ampel (ivy) geranium with cuttings in spring, the roots on them appear within 2 weeks, and in other varieties, such as royal and fragrant - and later (4-6 weeks).

If the process of propagation of cuttings occurred during the cold season, the rooting period is doubled. Also, the autumn-winter period is inconvenient because the plant can even fall into winter hibernation and never take root, having stopped all life processes.

How to prepare a geranium stalk?

We need a sharp knife, the blade of which needs to be disinfected with alcohol and gently cut off the stem (5-7 cm) at a right angle to the trunk. On the cuttings there must be at least two leaves or interstices. All buds and arrows need to be removed so that the plant does not put its strength into bloom, but rooting.

Next, we put all our cuttings for a couple of hours in a place where the sun's rays do not reach. This is necessary in order to dry up the slices. And when this happens, they need to be processed by Kornevin or crushed charcoal.

Planting cuttings is carried out in plastic cups with drainage holes in the bottom. Substrate we need a universal, mixed with vermiculite and sand. We pour it with boiling water in order to kill all the pests. When the ground cools, just stick the cuttings into the ground for 2 cm.

You do not need to cover the cuttings, water it at the first time, too. Drinks without roots geraniums a bit, so just enough to maintain the moisture of the soil without pouring.

When rooting takes place, you will notice it at the beginning of active growth. However, after the cuttings, the geranium will only be blossomed for the second year.
