How is anesthesia done at caesarean section?
To date, anesthesia during the operation of a cesarean section can be performed using the following types of anesthesia:
- epidural anesthesia;
- spinal anesthesia;
- general anesthesia.
So the first two types are very similar to each other, only epidural anesthesia is always performed during the planned operation, and spinal - with emergency cesarean. This method of anesthesia is introduced in the introduction of an anesthetic directly into the spinal cord, i.e. make an injection in the spine. It causes an almost complete loss of body sensitivity from the chest to the knees, which can be observed for several hours after childbirth.
With general anesthesia, the patient is put into a state of artificial sleep and wakes up when the operation is already completed.
Under what anesthesia is it better to do cesarean section?
When answering a question about what kind of anesthesia is best done with caesarean section (both first and second), most modern anesthesiologists make a choice in favor of epidural anesthesia.
The main arguments for choosing this method of anesthesia are:
- the risk of the effects of drugs on the child is completely excluded;
- quick action in a few minutes;
absolute anesthesia, the risk of partial or insufficient anesthesia is extremely small; - due to the fact that the woman is conscious, usually there are no problems with breathing;
- The mother gives birth to the first cry of her baby and can immediately attach it to her breast;
- BP reduction occurs gradually, which allows to maintain it in normative preventive measures.
Also, if the cause of cesarean delivery is a multiple pregnancy (twins, for example), then the question of which is better anesthesia for this is not worth using, and the choice of doctors always makes for epidural or spinal anesthesia.
