The most common kind of beds are the so-called high. To give a neat appearance and shape, when creating high beds , slate is often used.

Advantages and disadvantages of high beds from slate

Seeds, protected by slate sheets, have enough advantages:

The disadvantages of such beds include the fact that, according to some experts, asbestos cement, of which the slate consists, adversely affects the composition of the soil. In addition, under the bright rays of the summer sun, the slate becomes very hot and transfers this heat to the ground, which quickly becomes drained, because of which the beds with slate require more frequent watering.

How to make beds from slate?

To protect the beds, wavy and flat slate is used. As a rule, in order to make a high bed, the slate must be cut. Wavy material is cut with the help of a grinder across the waves. Then, from four sides of the garden we excavate the trenches, into which we place cut slate sheets and dig them in, carefully ramming the earth. It is not recommended to drive the slate into the ground, as it can be broken. For a stronger support, you can install metal pegs near the slate sheets.

Fencing from flat slate is done about the same. Since the length of the flat slate sheet is 1.75 m, it must be cut into two parts: 1 and 0.75 m. Slate sheets can be fastened together with a metal corner.

At the bottom of the future beds of slate laid brushwood, branches and other wood waste. Above you can put cardboard or old newspapers. The next layer will be sawdust or small shavings, over pour various vegetable waste, compost or peat. And, finally, the top layer of our beds should be fertile soil or chernozem.

After each layer is laid, it should be well spilled and tamped. If your bed is about 40 cm or more in height, you should make a screed using steel wire.

A high bed, arranged in this way, will be perfectly warmed by the sun, inside it there will be processes of decay of organic matter, which will also contribute to the warming of the soil in the garden. And later on in your garden will grow an excellent crop of vegetables.
