Analysis of EGF - what is it?
This method provides an examination of the state of the digestive system with the help of a fibrogastroscope. It is a flexible fiber-optic device with a light bulb at its end. The tube has a special channel, into which it is possible to insert biopsy forceps or other devices.
FGDS (deciphering the abbreviation means "fibrogastroduestoscopy") allows you to get data on any changes, take a tissue sample for laboratory tests, identify early neoplasms in the early stages.
Also, the method allows the selection of suspect formations for subsequent analysis and diagnosis, to detect and stop bleeding and heal ulcers.
The procedure is recommended if the patient complains about:
- nausea;
- regular heartburn ;
- rapid weight loss;
- heaviness and swelling after eating;
- an unpleasant eructation;
- violation of defecation;
- vomiting with blood.
No examination is scheduled:
- Persons with serious mental illness;
- suffering from pulmonary insufficiency;
- patients with sore throat or lung disease have gastroscopy after recovery.
How is the FGD procedure carried out?
- The patient is irrigated with lidocaine and placed on the couch on the left side.
- Then the doctor gives the mouthpiece, which is clamped with teeth. This helps prevent the biting of the endoscope.
- After that, the gastroenterologist inserts the tube into the oral cavity. This is the most unpleasant moment. There may be a gag reflex and eructation. However, the pain is not felt. The study lasts about a minute. If a biopsy is performed, the study can last up to 5-7 minutes.
Unpleasant sensations can be observed during the day. The probability of side effects is 1% and then, they arise because of inexperience of the doctor.
How is the FGD through the nose?
An alternative to traditional gastroscopy is the transnasal. It involves the study of internal organs by introducing an endoscope through the nasal passageway. The main problem that arises when swallowing the probe is the appearance of a vomiting reflex. The introduction of the tube through the nose can significantly reduce the discomfort, thus making the examination more convenient.
In addition, this method has several advantages:
- the possibility of detecting nasopharyngeal diseases;
- preservation of two-way communication between the patient and the doctor;
- has less impact on the body and on indicators such as heart rate and pressure, so this method is recommended for the elderly.
What does the EGD show?
During the survey, all information is displayed on the computer and recorded. If necessary, you can print out the printed images. The doctor, evaluating the results, can draw such conclusions:
- damage to the mucosa (atrophy, inflammation, ulcers);
- patency of the stomach, esophagus;
- presence of scars, constrictions, strictures;
- education (cancer, polyps);
- the nature of gastritis ;
- presence and degree of reflux;
- the presence of diverticula (protrusions of the stomach tissue).
How often is it possible to do EGF?
This procedure can not be called pleasant. But it is absolutely safe and painless, not harmful to the patient. Therefore, there are no rules on the frequency of its conduct. FHDS are conducted as often as necessary.
